It’s More of a Mission Statement

I was listening to a Joe Rogan Podcast recently where they were discussing the number of active podcasts. Active podcast was defined as publishing two episodes a month. In 2022, the actual numbers is 4.5 million. That’s a crazy number. I think starting a podcast today should bring you pause. How can you compete? Can you get even a few dozen listeners? Can you sustain content for the length of time necessary to get the tiniest foothold?

More importantly, how are you going to create a podcast that is fresh, entertaining and subscription-worthy? How can you expect to be successful – to stand out? As my friend Ben would say – how can you be the Purple Cow? With 4.5 million podcasts out there – I don’t think it’s possible.

I think what you can do is work really hard to be genuinely yourself.

Now I’m guessing that a blog post has pretty much the same odds — I’m not even going to Google that. It has to be huge. So here I am (under the advisement of a very dear friend and damn brilliant marketer) hammering out my first blog post after being in business for more than ten years. Keep in mind, I’m a guy who avoids most of today’s social media trending news.

So this is not really a post. “It’s more of a mission statement,” to quote Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire.

Now don’t worry, it’s not always going to cover filmmaking, marketing or commercials – how boring would that be?

I get inspired by all sorts of things; editing, a new piece of gear, a client conversation, a bike ride, a good burger. It may swing from kudos to a rant. Occasionally it will be brilliant or an a-ha moment. And yes, sometimes it will suck.

But this is my promise to you: I will always be me – open and honest.

And whatever it turns out to be, remember this: Jim made me do it.

PS: if you haven’t seen Jerry Maguire, do; it’s an amazing movie. And if you have seen it, watch it again; it holds up.
